There are indications that the name Van Moorst descends from Mokoroth . This name occurs as early as 777, in the days of Charlemagne. Around 1768 the name was changed to Van Moorst. The name then appears chiefly in the area of Woudenberg, in the province of Utrecht, the Netherlands. There is catholic and a reformed branch. In Achteveld (now spelt Achterveld), also in Utrecht, there is a hamlet called 'Het Moorst' (The Moorst). There are streets called 'Moorsterweg' (Moorstway) en 'Klein Moorst' (Little Moorst). There is also a brook called 'Moorsterbeek.' Four farms carry the family name: 'Het Moorst (The Moorst), Klein Moorst (Little Moorst), Middel Moorst (Mid Moorst) and Groot Moorst (Great Moorst).' The names are not affixed to the farm-buildings themselves, as doing so is not the done thing in reformed circles. Source: J M Schouten, Village Historian |
