The oldest researched source from the Dubelaar side, Heinrich Dövel (born around 1660), was found in Ennigerloh (Kreis Warendorf) in Westphalia, roughly in the centre of the triangle formed by Münster, Hamm and Gütersloh. But there were indications of an earlier ancestor still, which needs further investigation. I shall be grateful for any additional information, so, please contact me! A great-grandson of Heinrich Dövel, Johann Heinrich Döveler (1781-02-01 - 1864-02-05), moved around 1809 to the Kingdom of Holland (1806-1810)*, where Napoleon Bonaparte had put his brother Louis Napoleon on the throne. The reason for moving, which was accomplished on the back of a horse that was 'borrowed' from the lord of the manor where J H Döveler was employed, was to avoid conscription into Napoleon's armies. Napoleon's relative who was installed as King of Westphalia, took his duties quite seriously, whereas Louis in Holland permitted the Dutch to work with England against France. From his arrival in Holland onwards Johann Heinrich Döveler styled himself Hendrik Dubelaar. There is a story that one of Johann Heinrich's brothers moved to Holland around the same time. Hopefully, it will be possible to dig up some evidence. Other surnames used by Hendrik Dubelaar's siblings and ancestors, apart from Dövel and Döveler: Duiffel, Debels, Debel, Debelt and Döwel. The variant Deubel would also be possible. *The Kingdom of the Netherlands, under King William I, the son of Stadtholder William V, was not created until the Congress of Vienna (September 1814 - June 1815). |
